What Is the QR Code on Milk Packaging For?

You have probably noticed them appearing: a little QR code on the milk pack, usually near the barcode. Sometimes it does something genuinely useful, and sometimes it does almost nothing. Here is what those codes are actually for, and how to judge one.

The best case: real traceability

Used well, a QR code turns packaging into a window. Scan it and you can see:

• The farm the milk came from.
• The batch, and when the milk was collected.
• The lab test for that batch, including SNF and FAT.

The common case: marketing

Many QR codes do far less. They open a generic homepage, a recipe, or a promotion. There is nothing wrong with that, but it is not traceability, and it tells you nothing about the milk in your fridge. The word to watch for is specific: does the code know which pack you scanned?

How to tell the difference
