Long before wellness was a trend, Indian grandmothers had haldi doodh. A cup of warm milk, a spoon of turmeric, handed over at the first sign of a sniffle or a hard day. It is one of our oldest comfort drinks, and it is genuinely lovely. Here is what is behind it, and how to make a good one.

What is in the cup

The magic of haldi doodh is that it pairs two nourishing things:

  • Turmeric, which contains curcumin, long studied for its properties and central to traditional Indian wellness.
  • Milk, bringing calcium, protein and warmth. See why milk matters for bones.

A note of honesty: haldi doodh is a wholesome, comforting drink, not a medicine. Enjoy it for what it is, and see a doctor for anything that needs one.

A simple recipe

  • Gently warm one cup of milk, full cream gives a richer, more satisfying cup.
  • Stir in about a quarter to half teaspoon of turmeric.
  • Add a pinch of black pepper, it helps the body absorb curcumin.
  • Optional: a little ghee, grated ginger, a cardamom pod, or a touch of jaggery or honey.
  • Simmer a couple of minutes, then pour and sip warm.

A small spoon of A2 ghee is a traditional and delicious addition.

Why the milk decides the cup

Turmeric gets the attention, but the milk is most of the drink. Thin, diluted milk makes a thin, forgettable haldi doodh. Rich, fresh milk, with proper fat and SNF, makes a cup with body and comfort. Read full cream milk benefits.
